Additional Galapagos Tour

Feb 2 - 9

Because of conflicts with other post-meeting fieldtrips, it is necessary to offer an additional 8-day Galapagos Tour following the meeting (to be led probably by Pete Hall ). It would begin on February 2nd and finish on February 9th, thus allowing COV participants to attend other official fieldtrips. Same Special itinerary.

Cost $1825, including airfare Quito-Galapagos-Quito.

PRE - Reventador Caldera

4 days/ 3 nights

Jan. 19 - 22

  See below for POST-TRIP offer!

Here is a unique opportunity to see rumbling blocky lava flows only meters away, as well as possible Strombolian activity.
A 4 hour afternoon drive will take us from Quito, over the continental divide and into the cloud forest of
the Amazon Basin. We'll spend the night at a small hotel on the Reventador River . The next morning a 5-hour hike up a beautiful jungle trail that crosses many streams and through primary forest with lots of birds and colorful flora. Our hike will take us into Reventador's large caldera partially covered by the deposits of pyroclastic flows and debris flows of the Nov. 2002 eruption, now being overrun by hot andesitic lava flows. We will camp near the flows at a safe distance from the cone. Afternoon and nocturnal viewing of the lava flow and cone. Morning hike out of the caldera. The afternoon will be spent in the soothing hot springs of Papallacta, where we will enjoy a magical and well-deserved relaxing night. The next morning after relaxing in the hot springs or walking along the self-guided trails, we will return to Quito.

Notice: Hiking is moderate to difficult. Trip involves camping in shared tents. If you are not interested in hiking up into the caldera, you can see Reventador's cone from our hotel; other activities include incredible bird watching (Cock-of-the-Rocks, Parrots, Green Jays) and short hikes to a very large waterfall.

We will provide tents, sleeping bags and porters to carry this equipment.
